Long ago there were large structures that were built to bury the dead. This ancient type of building is called a pyramid. These can be found throughout the Middle East near Egypt. Only the wealthy and the pharaohs could afford to be buried this way. A pyramid can take as much as 10 to 20 years to build. The material the pyramids were built out of was mud, sand, and stone. They were each carved into a rectangular block and carefully stacked to form a triangular like structure. The Ancient Egyptians used ropes and pulleys to lift and stack these large stone blocks as seen below.
The very inside of the pyramids was a complex maze of tombs and hallways. This is what an Archeologist might think if he/she drew a diagram of the inner layout of a pyramid.
The largest of the pyramids is King Khufu’s Pyramid. It covers 13 total acres and reaches a grand height of 450ft. tall. Some experts say that a pyramid contained more than 2 million stones inside of it!!!
